“smoking was a way of preserving freshly caught salmon”
Smoking is a process that was used for centuries. In ancient times to prepare for the long winters, people smoked freshly caught salmon in order to keep for longer periods. They did this by salting and smoking at high temperature.
The Native Americans regarded salmon in high respect and they believed if anyone was to mishandle the fish ,then great spirits of the sea would drive the salmon away!
