May 2024 Editors Letter

May is a wonderful month with spring blossoming all around us. The landscape is filled with flowers and lush green foliage for as far as the eye can see

As the cherry blossom fades, the beautifully scented lilac takes centre stage. Lilac is quintessentially the flower of the month of May and like the cherry blossom, the lilac tree puts on a great show for a brief time and seduces us with her heady fragrance before it too fades away for another year.

I love seeing the lilac blossom this time of year with their cone shaped panicles covered in tiny delicate flowers. The lilac tree actually belongs to the olive family, ‘syringa Vulgaris’ and is native to the Balkans where it grows on the top of rocky hills. It would be so lovely to see the lilac in her natural habitat.

I have yet to plant one in my garden or maybe in a pot as there are wonderful miniature varieties that would be perfectly happy planted in a pot.

Places to Visit (Recommended by Tara)

May brings one of my favourite events of the year - the amazing RHS Chelsea flower show which runs from 24th to 28th May. A fabulous show for all plant lovers!

I am really looking forward to this very special event and can’t wait to see all the wonderful displays and floral stands. I know I will be coming away with a few new plants for my garden.

This exciting flower show will give you so much inspiration and great ideas as well as advice from experts who are readily at hand to offer help in whatever way they can. A well worth a visit to this great show so you can take away some inspiration on how to get the most from your outdoor space, whatever the size.

Whether you are at the start of your gardening journey looking to create your first outdoor oasis, or an experienced gardener looking to refresh the way you look at planting, then the RHS Chelsea flower show is definitely for you. I can promise you that you will have a lovely day out and enjoy every minute of it as I know I will.

“May is our Doorway to Summer”

At this time of the year as we look forward to warmer days, it’s lovely to throw open the back door and enjoy a morning coffee outdoors. It’s a luxury I really look forward to.

My dining room leads to the back garden and the large sliding glass doors allows perfect views to the garden which I love. There is something very cosy about linking indoors to the outdoors .

For me my garden is just another room and I feel that my colour palette indoors reflects my outdoors very much. I think todays interiors often blur the boundaries between our outdoors and our indoors.

We want our home to provide us with the same feeling we get when we step outside or go for a country walk, the feeling of calm and serenity. Bringing nature indoors can give us that very same feeling we feel when we step outside. I love bringing fresh flowers and foliage from the garden indoors and arranging them around the home.

I especially love to bring bare twigs and adorn them with delicate fairy lights to brighten up little corners in the home. Our homes can be made so beautiful when we bring the natural world inside and in some small way bringing us much closer to nature.

Enjoy the month of May and look forward to sunny summer days to come.

Warm regards

Tara X
