Tara's June 2024 Letter

As I write this months editors letter, I am enveloped by the scents of summer blossom all around me. The air smells sweet and a gentle warm breeze carries the sound of our bee friends all around the garden. The bees love all the nectar-rich plants in our outdoor space.

June is the month of the rose and my white climbing rose ‘Rosa wedding day’ never fails to disappoint as it throws out the most beautifully lavish blooms year after year for us all to enjoy. Her beauty is breathtaking and the pure white blooms sparkle like lights upon her rich green leaves. It flowers till the end of November most years.

I love these long lovely days of June, when there is still so much time to enjoy the outdoors, after a long day at work. Sometimes you can find me still pottering in the garden with my glass of wine, way after 9 pm. I love and treasure these lengthy evenings in the garden.

Time spent outdoors away from our technological world has become so important. A little outdoor area is so precious where we can connect with our natural world. A breathing space to relax and entertain friends and family with wonderful food and a jug of Pimms - as this is the season of Pimms

I grew up in the tropics and I love the way the houses over there have beautiful verandas all the way round the house. Wide open spaces to relax, surrounded by the fragrance of Jasmine creeping around the house.

As a child growing up in Sri Lanka, I spent many hours on the veranda, playing cards and eating mangoes that we had picked earlier by scrambling up mango trees and nursing our bruised knees lounging on rather nostalgic Lloyd loom chairs.

Looking back now I still remember the scent of roses all around me and my grandmother gathering the rose petals to make delicious rose tea which we would sip sitting on the veranda, while she recited beautiful tales of faraway places. Memories truly are treasures no one can steal.

I hope you make the most of this lovely month and the delightful longer days. Get outdoors for some alfresco dining, whether it’s in your own back garden or a picnic in the park, where you can set up a mini banquet to enjoy this sunny season.

Something that has been on my do list for a long time is a visit to Glyndebourne’s famous gardens to enjoy a picnic and an opera. That really is something to look forward to.

Next month one of my favourite annual events - RHS Hampton Court flower show and I can’t wait to see all the show gardens and take away lots of inspiration.

Have a wonderful month

Warm regards

Tara
